Good news the water bottles that you can buy at any convenience store that hold Aquafina, Smartwater and Dasani all fit this filter! Just have to remember to backflush the filter when the flow gets slow. Also I found online that the flexible bottle can be replaced by a Sawyer collapsible bottle or a Platy collapsible bottle.

Advantages: -screws onto standard water bottles -screws onto wide water bottles (nalgene) -has a drinking cap to keep it clean -bottle shrinks as you drink from it to take up less space. You can easily store it in a pocket. Disadvantages -soft plastic bottles are less durable -soft plastic bottles don't hold their shape which limits placement and means you can't for example stand it up on a table -slightly slower flow (if you suck through it and squeeze the bottle at the same time you'll get very good flow though)

LifeStraw uses a 2 stage filtration system. The first stage will filter about 500 gallons of water and according to the instructions, it will no longer function when it reaches that limit. I also got the impression that the stage 1 filter is not replaceable and that you'll need to buy a new LifeStraw. The second stage is a replaceable carbon filter that will filter 25 gallons before needing to be replaced.

As packaged the filter can be used immediately, but they're aiming for convenience and versatility with this one. The filter element has tube attachments--input and exit--allowing the filter to be part of a hydration pack, or to be used as an inline filter in a larger gravity system. Additionally, the dirty-water side has threads allowing the connecting of a plastic water bottle. Not all plastic bottles will fit of course. None of the bottles I had did.
