Agriculture water can be unsafe. Some farms use water that is actually treated wastewater. It’s cheaper for the farms to do that way because they pay a fraction of the cost if they would if they were using their own water from the water well or aquifer of some sort on their farm.
Wastewater
So based on the fact that there can be wastewater being used, there could be an accumulation of microbiological and chemical pollutants. Even if they’re using their own water source, their own water source could also end up being carried through the soil and pollute your well with chemicals they use for the crops like pesticides, herbicides, etc.
If they have a lot of livestock in the area, water could also pick up things from the livestock such as nitrates which could elevate the nitrates level in the water in your well.
It’s kind of expensive to test your well water for pesticides, herbicides, and petroleum products, and stuff like VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) and SOCs.
And just because you test it one year it’s not gonna be there the next year because things could change over time.
Nitrates are not that difficult to test. It’s around $30 or so at today’s cost test for nitrates. You can test for that on a regular basis if need be but again it could also change. So, just because you test it one year and it looks good doesn’t mean it’s gonna be good the next year.
What we tell people is, ‘let’s get your well tested for your basic stuff such as your iron, manganese, pH, water hardness, and total dissolved solids.’ Once we have those numbers, we can put a recommendation together of what type of treatment system is needed to take care of basic issues.
If you want to go a step further and protect your family from possible contaminations that could come from agriculture or livestock then we would recommend that you use a whole house carbon backwashing carbon filter that would go in line with your other filter system which you need for your other issues and remove a really high percentage of pesticides, herbicides, petroleum products and etc.
A quality whole house carbon filter will also reduce copper or lead and a whole variety of different types of contaminants.
Reverse Osmosis
The Reverse Osmosis, based on our experience and thousands of clients, is best for your drinking and cooking. It will remove a lot of what the carbon will remove but it also removes nitrates from the water and a variety of other things such as total dissolved solids from the water as well.
Showing making procedure is a good way to guarantee product quality
Now, for well water applications, if you’re concerned about microbiological contaminations such as coliform and E.coli bacteria, then we would recommend that you use an ultraviolet light system after your treatment system for the whole house.
So if you need an iron filter, water softener, or whatever you need there, and you want to go with the carbon filter as well, you install the ultraviolet light system after the last water treatment system (inline going to your house) and that will kill Coliform and E.coli bacteria on contact.
