High concentration coating of MnO2 on the Katalox surface (10%) is the biggest advantage compared to any similar product available in the market. This makes the oxidation and co-precipitation of contaminants much more effective.
For removal of very high (over 7ppm) concentration or when organics are present Katalox media requires the use sodium hypochlorite (bleach) as an oxidizer and killing agent, which provides accelerated catalytic oxidation on the surface of the media. A solution tank and conversion kit can be purchased separately.
Media life averages 5 to 10 years before replacement is needed.

Hi, this is Craig at Quality Water Treatment, also known as Craig the Water Guy. I hope you're doing good today. I'm called Craig the Water Guy because I love to fix water, give families healthy water, but I also love to play in water. So it's a fair fact, every time I wash dishes or wash my hands in the sink or anything like that, I always seem to get water everywhere. My wife's gone, ‘You got water all over the place. I said, Well, I'll create the water guy.’ So anyways, it's a side joke.

So on the Katalox here, the Katalox Media, the Katalox Light Media, it is used in our Katalox iron filter, which removes iron, manganese, and sulfur. It also raises the pH balance of the water as well. This media is just absolutely fantastic. I've been doing this for almost 40 years, and I've seen iron filtration and sulfur, manganese type media come out over the years, and I've tried most of them. Some of them are good, some of them not so good. Some of them handicap you where they have a lot of issues where the quality of the water has to be this and you can't have this, otherwise, it harms the media and so forth.

This media here, we've been using for quite a few years and we haven't had any problems with it at all. It's just a fantastic media, and it does a better job than any other iron, bag, and sulfur media I have ever been associated with in my career. So our iron filter system, our AIO, Air Injected Optimization System, uses this media. This media is going to last anywhere from 3 to 7 years, roughly. Of course, that all is determined on how bad your water is, for starters. How much water do you actually use is also a big part of the longevity of this media. Figure 3 to 7 years.

The way you're going to know that this media is starting to go bad is pressure loss. The system backwashes itself every four days, which is pretty typical for any iron filter type media. Let's say it backwashes and you have really good water pressure after the regeneration backwash process is completed, and a day later or two days later before the four days comes up for it to backwash again, you start losing pressure again. So that's usually a sign that that media is starting to solidify and get plugged up and it's time to replace it.

The other side is that everything mechanically is working on the system. It's doing everything it's supposed to do. It's back washing like it's supposed to. It's sucking air into the system like it's supposed to. But your water quality is still not where it was. You're still getting some sulfur odor now, or some iron bleed through, or some manganese bleed through. When that happens, then it's typically time to replace the media as well.
