Fleck 5600 Birm Filter for Iron & Manganese

Birm iron filter is a filtration system that utilizes birm media. The Iron Filter Fleck 5600 removes iron and manganese up to 5 ppm oxidized iron and 1 ppm manganese; however, it does not remove sulfur.

Birm is really a filter medium used in iron filtration systems. It oxidizes and eliminates iron and manganese without pre-treatment. but works absolute best following aeration. The pH should be 7.0 or above for birm to function properly.

This filter system consists of:

Fleck 5600 Filter Valve - Standard timer backwashing filter valve.
Simple mechanical style is easy to use
Controls are user-friendly and effortlessly programmable
Can handle flow rates as much as 20 gallons/minute

How it Functions:
As water flows through the filter tank containing Birm media, with enough oxygen within the water, the media causes the iron to form rust or strong iron particles. After these rust particles get trapped within the filter media, once or twice per week they're automatically backwashed out to drain, and also the filter media is prepared to filter once more.

Pros:

No chemicals to buy for upkeep (under correct circumstances) and no regeneration needed.
Very high iron removal efficiency.
Occasional backwashing needed.
Tough material having a long life and wide temperature variety.

Circumstances:

Water must have a pH of 7.0 to 9.0. for birm to function correctly.
The dissolved oxygen content should be a minimum of 15% from the iron or manganese content.
Water must include no tannins, chlorine, oil, or hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor). For water with any of those items we suggest the GreenSand filter systems.

For many wells deeper than 50 ft, an air injector must be used for additional oxygen within the water prior to the Birm filter. When the water being filtered is water from an open storage tank or spring, no additional air injection is usually required.

REVISED REVIEW!!! While initial confusion revolved around not knowing if the module was correct, that was resolved. The most important reason in buying was to remove iron and my initial results, after a week, NO MORE IRON!!!! I am so disappointed that I waited a year not buying this. Previously, when I would change my double stage water filter, the "white" filters were almost completely "orange/red". Yesterday, when I changed, there was NO sign of any iron in the water and the "white" filters were only a little dark from the initial rinse of the tank. It's very rare that I write a review of a product. It has to work very well or be a great value. This covers both bases. Before, my water stunk out of one faucet and was the color of a foggy beer out of all of them. Really bad! I didn't have any issues with hard water before so no salt unit hooked up before or now. I have installed 2 of these units in my houses and they work very well. I am in a area where red water is likely when you drill a well. Wells are 90 to 300 feet deep and water typically will turn red over night when left in a open jar. This filter delivers were nice soft feeling water as it removes soluble iron as it flows thru the filter. I follow this with a salt softener and the water is nice but I have used it alone with good results. Easy to install. The instructions packed with the unit are not that useful but the online manual helps allot.

We just built a new house with a Well. Once we moved in we realized we had an iron problem. I installed a 3 stage filter system, it helped but the water would still turn yellow, had a taste, and smelled. I had previously installed a Durawater water softener and was quite pleased. So after listening to the Mrs. complain about the water I broke down and bought this thing. All I have to say is BUY IT! it cleared the water up, it tastes great and no longer stinks, worth every penny. Just remember, if you have a traditional water heater you have 40-50 gallons of crappy well water sitting there, it will take a couple days to clear up.

This has worked well for me for around two months since I installed it. I think that it helped remove a very serious hydrogen sulfide smell, and also helps reduce the iron in our water. I'm not 100% sure how much credit I should give to this device, because I also replaced the hot water heater anode rod and a few canister filter cartridges at the same time.

I could not be more happy with this! If our softener ran out of salt we would have severe iron stains on everything within a day. This has completely eliminated the iron staining. It also got rid of the sulphur smell from our well water. This is worth every penny. It does make the water harder, so you will likely need a softener after it, but it is absolutely worth it if you have iron or sulphur in your water!!!!

Works well and support is very good I bought the iron filter 5 years ago. (This is what a review should truly look like). I have well water, not city or county water. The softener had iron throws before installation of the filter. Once installed and backwashed on a routine basis, the softener did its job better. Quality also informed me when to replace the media. That is beyond excellent. I had to ask for instructions to assist me, which they did (excellent again). When changed, which was a little challenging. Needed a dolly and straps to get it outside to dump the old media. It was certainly capturing the iron. Easy to clean and replace the media. The hardest part was cleaning the control mechanism because of the amount of iron it had in it. I would recommend the company.

Bought a house where the faucets, shower, toilet etc had bad permanent iron stains. Had to fix the cause before replacing them. Water was clear (not reddish) but smelled metallic. Toilet would turn black a few days after cleaning it. White plastic shower caddy had turned orange. Installed March 2019, also have water softener on the same well. No additional stains since. Even bought a new shower caddy and it's still white. Tested well water with iron tester and it reads 2.12 ppm. Tested house water and it reads 0.00. Love this thing!

How it Functions

Operation CONDITIONS for Birm Filters

🔎 Check To Insure Proper Function

A water test of your raw well water is highly suggested prior to buying filter systems.

Water Conditions Required:

Water must have a pH of 7.0 to 9.0. for birm to function correctly.
The dissolved oxygen content should be a minimum of 15% from the iron or manganese content.
Water must include no tannins, chlorine, oil, or hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor).
If any of these items are present, we suggest the Greensand filter system.
Aeration is recommended for optimal performance.

For Wells 50 Feet or Deeper:

An air injector must be used to add oxygen to deep well water prior to feeding a Birm filter.

If water is fed from an open storage tank or spring, then additional air injection is typically not required.

Check your well pump's effective flow rate... Easy as 1, 2, 3...

Minimum Water Flow Rate Required:

The size of an iron filter or pH neutralizer system is dependent on the flow rate from your well pump.

Please check your flow rate to select the properly sized system.

Do not select a system that requires a higher flow rate.
