New carbon filter was given praise by my plumber.

I like these housing units and have two of them, but it can be a bit tricky to re-assemble after replacing the cartidge. I have found that it is essential to completely lubricate the o-ring and the threads, otherwise the seal is poor and there is a lot of leaking after the water is turned back on. I think in our case we have a lot of iron in the water, which adheres to the o-ring and makes it bind when screwing the blue housing back into the top part of the filter. If the o-ring becomes distorted, it does not seal well.

Used as pre-filter the clear makes it easy to see when to change the filter.

Durable product. This unit actually saves money on filter replacement for the osmosis system and the refrigerator filters. I don't need a refrigerator filter. It gets its water from the osmosis system. Great ice. If you pressurize the ice maker from the osmosis system you'll need a bypass filter for the fridge, the pressure will be too low otherwise.

Installed the filters and just hand tightened the housing and no leaks. The o-ring on these housings are thicker the the o-rings i have used in the past, so sealed well.

This is a pre-filter for a water conditioner on a well system

I'm on well water and this was a must have. I made the connection using pex but copper/pvc wouldn't be hard either. I would recommend installing as close to the supply point as possible so you can avoid sediment reaching water heaters or any other appliances/faucets. I'd also recommend shut off valves close to the inlet and outlet for filter changes. The only issue I have was a little water leaking around the threads when I first installed. Took it back apart and used Teflon impregnated pipe dope. No more leaks after that. Haven't had any problems other than the minor leak.
Porter K
I like that this housing is not see through as it keeps light out. Light promotes algae growth in the filter. For tightening, just use your hands to limit torque so it won't get stuck for the next time. A replacement O-ring is good to have on hand

I needed a good whole house water filtration system for my 2003 40' Alfa SeeYa MotorHome. Could not find one meeting my demands, so assembled my own from parts ordered here . I saved 50% on building my own system and it, I believe is better than anything offered in the RV market place. The Big deal here is full flow, no pressure drop, 100% complete filtration and ease of use with complete portability.

Use plenty of Teflon tape on the bushings as they tend to bottom out, but I had no problem with leaks at these points. Flow rate is far superior but you would expect as much given how large these housing are. They are BIG and DO NOT forget the mounting brackets (sold separately). So far, I can say water quality seems to be comparable to what the old filter systems produced.
Lance W
The installation holes on top of the housing are NOT TAPPED which means you, or your plumber must tap them before inserting bolts or you must use special 1" self tapping screws. THEY DON'T TELL YOU. I learned the lesson too late and ruined one of the 4 mounting holes. It worked out OK. Anyway, Excellent filter and housing!

Have had this filter in service for less than two months. It is doing a great job of filtering the water but has a seep leak that I can't seem to get stopped. Could be faulty O ring. Haven't had time to order one. Not a real serious problem but sometimes it sets off my moisture alarm for the whole system it is in. But overall, product doing a great job.

Filter housing is study and robust. Large but manageable. Insure you get bracket with it because it is heavy when full. Only reason not 5 stars, fittings used have to be really taped and doped to seal. A loose fit with out. Other than that, good product so far. Also you will need screws for the bracket/filter housing. I hope to get twice the life out of filters with upsizing filter size and housing.

I installed this unit in my home as the "first line of defense" in my filtration system. It is designed for sediment blockage filters so that my UV filter will be assured that clear water is entering it. So far, it is serving its intended purpose very well with a 5 micron string wound filter. I will provide a reliability review at a later date when I have logged a sufficient amount of duty cycle hours.

First thing I noticed on this product was how heavy duty it felt. This is no toy product, it will last me and my kids a lifetime. Shipping was fast, description was accurate, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase more of these if I needed them. Went to HomeDepot and got everything I needed to run these in series, I have never had any leak issues associated with this product. Had product for about 6 months now.

Used as the final filter to our kitchen sink, dish washer ,osmosis system and Refrigerator ice maker. The filter I use is a .5 micron so there was an anticipated slight reduction of pressure.. No fault to this housing. Works well with my well water system. 40/60psi.
Katy J
Long lasting, very dependable but hard to open sometimes.

Easily installed and working properly. I previously had a Pentek Big Blue before I had replaced it with the GE unit. My old Big Blue lasted 14 years. The GE lasted only 5 years before the pressure release button failed. Try removing the filter housing to change the water filter without a properly functioning pressure release valve button...it's not going to happen. I figure I'm all set for the next 14 years.

I have not lost pressure in my house with 3 sinks, 2 outside faucets with auto watering system, 1 water softener, reverse osmosis system, 1 dishwasher, 1 refrigerator ice maker, 1 shower, 1 toilet, 1 washing machine, 40 gallon water heater. All my plumbing is on the first floor from the basement. Nice filter large and heavy duty.

Bought two of these filters and completely happy with the product. Used brass and copper fittings and unions, with pvc ball valves on the inlet and outlet of the filters and had no leaks.

A whole house filter helps your faucets, water softener control valve, appliances, hot water heater tank, refrigerator filter and basically anything that sand or dirt in the water might not be a good idea for.

We had a GE housing on our whole house filter. Over the years, it always made some noise, but it worsened; my husband said that it was a "water hammer". The noise and vibration really irritated him, and he worried about damage to the pipes, so he shut the system down. At times our water can be heavily sedimented because it comes from a nearby river and is processed by a nearby, aging, small water treatment plant. After several months, I pestered him to look into solving the problem. Our water psi is in the 80's and some professionals said that we would have to spend additional money, in the $300 plus range, to compensate for that level of pressure in order to stop the water hammer. Our handyman installed this filter at the end of October 2015 in less than an hour, there has not been one peep of noise, and I love the water quality.

I like this housing. It fit well with my 3/4 pipe. It installed easily and it is water tight. I just wish it had a clear housing.

The unit is too heavy to just hang off the pipes without a mounting bracket, which you need to purchase separately. It also came without bolts for mounting it to the bracket. A phone call to the supplier solved that issue. They gladly mailed the 4 required bolts. I would suggest these be provided with each Big Blue unit since they aren't likely to be found in a typical homeowner's inventory of hardware. Hence, that involves an extra trip to your local hardware store, if you are fortunate enough to have one close by. I would also suggest the mounting bracket be included even if it requires an increase in price. It's analogous to buying a motor vehicle and then ordering basic wheels as an accessory.
Jim K
Happy with the purchase, especially since they are not very expensive. I do note that the instructions say to replace the filter housing after 10 years. I guess they are worried about eventual failure of the plastic.
Rita L
I always have an extra on hand. The clear needs to be changed every 5 years. I have used these for 15 years. After installing the new housing, the relief valve leaked. I took the old and new relief valve apart. I noticed the washer around the screw that springs again the body on the new housing was not the same size (thickness) as I turned the screw. The old relief valve screw was the same thickness. I replaced the old screw in the new housing and that solved the leaking issue.

The recommended silicone lubricant is expensive and hard to find. I have been using petroleum jelly (less than $2 for a big jar at any drug store) with no issues. For me at least, there was no need to lubricate on first use, as the o-ring was new and clean. But on two subsequent occasions when I tried to replace the filter cartridge and didn't bother to lubricate, I had a very difficult time getting it to re-seal. Lubrication resolves this difficulty completely.

Some of the brass to plastic threads seemed a bit loose, so I used both pipe tread tape and pipe thread compound on all fittings, and it worked great.

I’ve had 2 for 5-6 years and added this one for a third. I use a 1 micron, a charcoal and a 0.35 micron in my whole house system and my water test on city water goes from over 400ppm to around 120ppm. Bought this to replace another brand that the housing cap cracked on in less than 3 months. My only complaint is actually a tip on installation. Put plenty of the provided grease on the o-ring or they can be very hard to remove the housings to change the filters.
Jonas B
I don't regret adding a proper filtration to our house given how much water we drink and that we are on a private well and our last test showed some problems.
Jamison U
We had an old filter casing that was leaking, and the O ring was stretched out. This came in less than a week and made the whole thing work perfectly! The video on how to do it was helpful too!
Bruce T
If you have two stories and an extra bathroom you will probably want the longer 20" filter.
Wilburn E
With my entire system in place, I did not notice any loss in pressure so this worked exactly as expected!
Dominick T
Works fine. You have to use the little tube of grease that came with it on the rubber seal (just a thin coat) so that it doesn’t “bunch” the rubber up, causing it to leak.

Installation was simple! I installed the filter assembly and then the softener. I put the softener valves in Bypass Mode so I could restore water to the home while I situated the brine tank how/where I wanted it. Even with only the only the Big Blue Carbon Brick Filter in the plumbing circuit, my wife told me she could notice a difference in the water quality & taste before I had the softener working! Make sure to get the bracket, wrench, & extra filter when ordering for the best deal! Wrench really helps with filter changes. We are very, very pleased with this product!!!
