The Brainerd zone was before a thick pine woodland that served the Chippewa Indians as chasing grounds and blueberry fields. The territory that would progress toward becoming Brainerd was first observed by white men on Christmas Day, 1805. US Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, stayed outdoors in the zone for a day of rest and unwinding while at the same time investigating the wellspring of the Mississippi River.
