City of South Houston Drinking Water Report Info
South Houston is neighboring Pasadena, two miles southeast of the crossing point of Interstate Highway 45 and State Highway 3, in southeastern Harris County. The town was named Dumont when it was established in 1907 by C. S. Woods of the Western Land Company. By 1910 a mail station had been built up, and by 1913 the town was incorporated as South Houston. The principal chose civic chairman was Walter Tharp. During the town's initial years nearby growers dispatched the produce of truck ranches, including strawberries, figs, and various vegetables, on the tracks of the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad. The improvement of the Houston Ship Channel helped the advancement of overwhelming businesses further inland. South Houston grew quickly between the 1940's and the mid 1960's. Its most vivid resident during those years was George Christy, who filled in as the City's chairman from 1949 to 1951 and from 1960 to 1964. Christy was the owner of a bazaar, and his elephants helped construct Spencer Highway. In 1960 South Houston had a populace of 7,523. By then the City had pulled in various littler ventures, including makers of black-top, wire items, oilfield synthetic substances, and solid conductors. In 1980 South Houston detailed a populace of 11,782 and 303 organizations, for the most part in the retail and administration enterprises. The people group is plentifully provided with municipal diversion offices and open administrations, including present day putting out fires hardware, and a library. Close by attractions include Hobby Airport, the San Jacinto Battleground, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center..
