About Enumclaw Local History In 1879 Frank and Mary Stevenson homesteaded what is currently the focal point of the town. Early pilgrims called this area "Stevensonville," yet the name later changed to Enumclaw (which signifies "roaring clamour") after Enumclaw Mountain close to town.
