Highland Water Works Drinking Water Report Info
It was referred to just as the Highlands from the 1850s when the Johnstons gained 53 sections of land of swampy land until the town was consolidated April 4, 1910 basically in light of the fact that it had a sandy edge that rose over the bog. About 20 years before Highland was fused, the provincial and meagerly populated zone turned into an extension site for kraut handling for the Libby, McNeil and Libby Company. By 1890, the town's biggest industry was a canner of prepared cabbage developed by nearby Dutch ranchers. Nature's abundance would turn into Highland's inheritance. Harvests, similar to cabbage, onions, other root vegetables, just as summer joys like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, would help feed occupants living in the clamoring industrial urban areas toward the north. The rich harvests of vegetables that prospered in the sandy soil along Ridge Road helped keep the cannery flourishing with nourishments handled there, bundled onto rail vehicles and dispatched to Chicago and focuses east. The Johnstons and the Libby adventure are references in Highland history similar to the heritages left by the Clough, Lynch, Kooy,Van Til and Lamprecht families. Joined, the commentaries help total a developing picture of Highland, over 100 years of history kept energetic and alive by occupants like Sue Douthett and the individuals from the Highland Historical Society. They house mementoes that have been amassed in an enormous study hall at Lincoln Center that has been changed over into the Town Museum. Douthett keeps insights regarding the establishing families, enterprises, even geography that indexes the town's past. As caretaker of the exhibition hall, Douthett jam the fortunes that have been given from storage rooms and storm cellars all through town. She is continually hoping to share what she has realized, clearing a chronicled trail utilizing markers from an earlier time. "THis is a history worth safeguarding," she says. "Good country is so intriguing on the grounds that such huge numbers of the families who helped manufacture the town in its initial days have relatives who have stayed around the local area right up 'til the present time.".
