The Village of Maywood is an Illinois home-rule organisation that became organized on October 22, 1881. The Village is called for May, the deceased daughter of Colonel William T. Nichols, Maywood's founder. Colonel Nichols become a State Representative and Senator from Rutland County, Vermont. He served with the Vermont Volunteers throughout the Civil War. In 1868, Colonel Nichols and 6 different guys came to Illinois from Vermont and fashioned the Maywood Company, which evolved the Village. Colonel Nichols lived right here until his death in 1882. The Nichols home stood on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Second Street (now Oak Street), that's the existing area of the First Suburban National Bank. The residence became razed after World War I. Way Back InThe unique plot of Maywood changed into 1-three/4 miles north and south and half mile east and west alongside the bank of the Des Plaines River, with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad going for walks almost via the center.
