Perhaps you have ever wondered exactly where our water originates from? And how rainfall impacts our water source in Palm Coastline? The City of Hand Coast has more than 60 raw drinking water production wells that extract fresh groundwater from two sources-the Confined Surficial Aquifer (northern Palm Coast) and the deeper Top Floridan Aquifer (southern Palm Coast). The Palm Coast Energy Department works carefully with State companies, including the St. Johns River Water Administration District, to determine the quantity of water readily available for current use whilst also ensuring the water supply is protected for the future. Since we don't have good-sized rivers of drinking water flowing underground, Hand Coast's water supply is locally charged up again. That means we need to maintain as much of our rain as possible so it may soak into the surface to resupply the aquifers. Our draining system of swales, ditches, and canals is made to capture rainwater and permit it to leak back into the ground. Estuarine habitat also plays an essential role in recharging aquifers. Spraying extremely treated effluent-called gotten back water-on our turf also helps with aquifer recharge. The City lately completed a major gotten backwater project along U. S. 1 south of Matanzas Woods Parkway. We now have eight water wells in that area, and reclaimed water from your wastewater treatment plant life is being used presently there to recharge the aquifer. Even with Hand Coast's 60+ water wells and strategy to refresh the aquifer, drinking water supply in Fl is greatly impacted by the weather. In 2017 we saw the extremes: severe drought in the springtime, lots of rain during the summer, then Hurricane Irma and several Nor'easters with excessive rain in the fall. An Aquifer Performance Test and the first round of modeling were finished for long-range drinking water supply planning that could include dealing with brackish water to create it usable on drinking water. The City is currently finalizing a Drinking water Supply Facilities Function Plan for planning through 2035.
