Pocono Township was made as a different Township by a declaration of the courts of Northampton County in November 1816. It is limited on the north by Tunkhannock and Tobyhanna Townships, east by Coolbaugh and Paradise Townships and the west by Jackson Township. It took its name from the mountains which reach out crosswise over it. Pocono Township includes 35 square miles. In 1830 the populace 564; in 1840 the populace was 973; in 1980 the populace was 5,772. In 1990 the populace was 7,550; in 2000 the populace was around 9,606; and in 2009 the populace is assessed to be well more than 10,000. The town of Tannersville, where the neighborhood government structures are found, was settled in around 1750 by John Larner, previously of Philadelphia. Tannersville, as indicated by one student of history, was first called Pocono Point. Numerous Indian trails were later enlarged for stagecoach use, and later developed into expressways. Two of the most acclaimed of these are the Lackawanna Trail (presently Route 611 through Tannersville) and Sullivans Trail. Learneds Tavern (caught fire in 2000 currently present day – CVS Pharmacy) was built up along Lackawanna Trail, and in 1779, was the keep going structure on the wilderness. On June 18, 1779, General Sullivan and his officers stayed outdoors at the Learns or Learneds Tavern. The landmark perceiving the site of Learneds Tavern can be seen aide to the parking part of CVS Pharmacy.
