Starting With the Early Settlers The character of the early settlers of this area is confirm in the decision they made for the district seat. They could well have chosen the Cane Creek region, site of the first settlement. It would no uncertainty have been an accommodation to them and a money related advantage, yet they chose to have their district seat in the focal point of the area on a safe waterway to make it all the more easily accessible to all who might come here to live. How We got our Name They chose a uninhabited bluff on Black River on which to put the town that would contain their administering offices, and they named it for the wonderful poplar trees that developed profusely on that bluff. They challenged it Poplar False front and they set out to fabricate a town, their region seat. Before the finish of 1850 a town had been started and some ten families lived in Poplar Bluff. In 1855 the first town hall was constructed and the town developed, and at long last, on Feb. 9, 1870, Poplar Bluff was joined.
