Ship Bottom is often alluded to as the "Door to Long Beach Island" on account of the Causeway connecting the Borough to the terrain. Naming of Ship Bottom Ship Bottom is one of the most established spot names on Long Beach Island. As per the nearby history specialist John Bailey Lloyd, creator of "Six Miles at Sea," the name dates from an abnormal wreck that happened in March, 1817. The skipper of a clipper traveling south was exploring through a thick mist when he heard cries from the bearing of the shoreline. Experiencing a clipper traveling north, he alarmed Captain Stephen Willets of Tuckerton that there may be a ship in a difficult situation close to the shore. In spite of the fact that Willets and his group could see nothing in the mist, nor might they be able to hear anything other than the crash of their own ship's ringer, they paddled along the external bar for a few hours scanning for the jeopardized ship. At long last a dim shape showed up - the frame of a ship toppled in the reefs. Bodies swung from the apparatus and bounced in the sub zero ocean. As one of Willets' men climbed installed the stranded boat, he heard a clamor under his feet- - somebody tapping within the barnacled structure. With a hatchet, Willets cleaved an opening in the ship's bottom close to the bottom and, after much battling, liberated the young lady caught inside. She talked no English. Yet, in the wake of being taken aground, she offered her thanks by drawing a cross of thanks in the sand. Nobody knows her name or the name of the ship since they were rarely recorded. Be that as it may, the spot of the wreck and the salvage ended up known as "Ship Bottom." Ship Bottom progressed toward becoming Life Saving Station #20 in 1872, and the primary lasting dwelling was set up in 1898 by Captain Wesley Truex, attendant of the station. A community quickly grew up around the unit. On January 18, 1910, the Italian vessel Fortuna steered into the rocks on the 16th Street sea shore during a thick mist. The chief and group were protected, yet the ship overturned in the soft sand. The destroyed Fortuna lay on its side on the Beach Arlington sea shore during the greater part of 1910, until it was cut up for rescue. The surrendered stay was recuperated by some persevering volunteers and now remains before the Ship Bottom Borough Hall to respect the oceanic history of our Island. The grapple is kept up by Mike of Mayetta Painting and Staining. In the long run the towns of Bonnie Beach, Bonnet Beach, Edgewater Beach, Beach Arlington and Ship Bottom worked together to shape the borough on May 25, 1925. The town was known as Ship Bottom-Beach Arlington until 1947 when the name was changed to Ship Bottom..
