Southern Utilities Company, Inc. is a fourth era family possessed HVAC gear and supply house. We are a stocking distributor of pumps, motors and controls. Our present sales staff has more than 230 joined years of involvement in supplying the HVAC needs of both government and business consumers. Home Company History Line Card Contact Quote Request A Brief History of Our Company Southern Utilities Company, Inc. was established by Stephen Ambrose Gorman in 1932. The company was initially a distributor of Bell and Gossett products with a domain from the Mason Dixon Line to the Florida Keys. Stephen was an alum of Catholic University of America with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He proceeded to join the U.S. Maritime Reserve Flying Corps and was an individual from the second graduating class at Pensacola, Florida. After WWI Stephen came back to his local Washington, DC and turned into a pioneer in the HVAC industry. The business kept on developing under his direction until his less than ideal passing in April of 1935. Right now his better half Mary assumed control over the leadership job. For the following twelve years, Mary kept on maintaining the business from her home with the assistance of one worker and her youngsters. Mary kept item stocked in her basement and got deliveries at the indirect access. Washington Gas was known to send customers hoping to purchase pumps to Mary's entryway, as she was presently a widow maintaining a business and supporting her four kids. In 1947, Mary's eldest son, Stephen Francis joined the company full time. The business kept on expanding, and in 1958 the DC area was migrated from Mary and Stephen's home on 39th St NW to it's present area on ninth St NW where Stepen Francis took over duties as President and CEO. After finishing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and serving as an officer in the U.S. Flying corps, Mary's youngest son, Joseph James, also joined the company full time. Joseph served as President from 2000 until he resigned on March 31, 2005 following 48 years of service. In 1969, Southern Utilities opened a second area on Ripley Street in Silver Spring, MD. There, they kept on developing their business and had the option to expand their stock getting to be one of the most respected names in the industry. In 2005 the company made the successful transition of the Maryland area from Silver Spring to Gaithersburg. Presently in it's fourth era, Southern Utilities Co. Inc. looks forward to serving the future needs of the HVAC industry..
