History and Tourism How Charles River was Named Archeological proof shows the Watertown region was first involved by Indians about 6,000 years back. The zone was occupied by two Native American clans, Pequossette and the Nonantum, who settled along the waterway banks. John Smith investigated the bank of Massachusetts in the mid-1600s naming the stream that moves through Watertown, Massachusetts. It was later changed to the Charles River, to pay tribute to King Charles I. Roger Clap and the Dorchester Men In May 1630, a gathering driven by Roger Clap, arrived on the lofty banks of Charles River at a point close to the present site of Perkins School for the Blind. He recounts the main experience with the Pequossette Indians when they moved toward Clap's arrival party with a huge bass for which they were given bread by the pioneers. This scene is honoured on the official Town seal. Not long after Clap's gathering left, at Governor Winthrop's structure, to settle in Dorchester where it was thought the land was better for cows. Watertown Became an Official Settlement In July of that equivalent year, a little company of Englishmen and the individuals who had landed from England on the Arbella, advanced up the Charles and arrived at a point close to the present area of Mt. Reddish-brown Hospital in Cambridge. These Englishmen were driven by Sir Richard Saltonstall and his Minister George Phillips. From the start called Saltonstall Plantation, their settlement officially moved toward becoming Watertown on September 1630. Roger Clap Watertown Seal 2.jpg Economic Development in Watertown at first included the present networks of Weston, Waltham, and enormous segments of Lincoln, Belmont, and Cambridge – One of the biggest American settlements of now is the right time. It before long developed to be a significant place for exchange, business, and industry. In this manner, by request of the General Court of Massachusetts, Cambridge and Watertown were committed to paying the Indians what might be $10,000 by the 1980s.
