DESCRIPTION
German-engineered. Built to beat iron, manganese and sulfur.
Katalox Light is a lightweight filter media with a high-density (10%) MnO2 coating on ZEOSORB®. It handles iron up to 10 ppm with no added oxidizer (up to 30 ppm with one), manganese up to 7 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 5 ppm. It filters down to 3 microns and is ANSI/NSF 61 certified.
- Chemical-free for most wells
- Higher flow rates and lower backwash frequency
- No crystalline silica
- Works at pH 5.8-10.5
- Sizes: 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 cu.ft.
- 100% no-risk money-back guarantee
HOW TO USE
Swap the media. Keep the clean.
- Bypass the filter, drain the tank and remove the old media.
- Never reuse media from another vessel (biofouling risk).
- Load the Katalox Light and reseat the valve.
- Run a startup backwash and rinse per the Katalox guide.
- Return to service. Backwash is 5-10 minutes at 5.5 GPM/sq.ft.
For iron or manganese over 7 ppm, or if organics are present, add bleach as an oxidizer. A solution tank and conversion kit are sold separately.
HOW DOES IT WORK
Oxidize. Trap. Flush.
The MnO2 coating oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into solid particles. The fine bed traps them down to 3 microns. Each backwash flushes them to drain, and the lightweight media needs less water to do it.
The result is clear, odor-free water without chemicals in most cases.
18 Reviews, Consistently Real
The overwhelming pattern: genuinely effective at removing iron, manganese, and sulfur — including "water tasted like drinking blood, toilets looked like rust buckets" turning into clean, good-tasting water. Multiple reviewers specifically replaced other media (filter ag, hydroxide media) with Katalox and reported it performing at least as well, often better. One reviewer relayed a full replacement story: high hydrogen sulfide well water inherited from a previous owner who didn't understand their own system, extensive personal research, then a switch to Katalox that solved it.
Worth relaying honestly: one reviewer flagged that the media only comes in 1 cu ft increments, meaning their 1.5 cu ft tank requirement meant buying more than they strictly needed. Another reviewer described a genuine startup concern — some fine media initially coming through their plumbing along with a temporarily elevated pH — which resolved on its own after continued operation, a pattern confirmed as normal and expected. One detailed review specifically noted the media requires air injection at high contaminant levels, and that the startup backwash needs to run long enough (at least one hour) to bring pH back down — genuinely useful operational detail for anyone installing this themselves.

Filtration down to 3 microns.
Katalox is a new brand of revolutionary advanced filtration media completely developed in Germany. Its composition genuinely outperforms the contemporary filter media currently available in the water treatment industry — far exceeding Birm, Greensand Plus, and Manganese Greensand.
Manufactured in Germany. Engineered with a unique MnO coating technique on ZEOSORB®, giving it lightweight construction, higher filtration surface, more service life, and more reliable performance than any other existing granular filter media.
Suitable for residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal applications worldwide — high-level filtration, color and odor removal, iron/manganese/hydrogen sulfide removal, zinc, or copper.
ANSI/NSF 61 Certified for drinking water applications, and meets ANSI/NSF 372 lead-free compliance.
The high concentration coating of MnO2 on the Katalox surface (10%) is the biggest advantage compared to any similar product on the market — genuinely more effective oxidation and co-precipitation of contaminants.
For removal of very high (over 7 PPM) concentration, or when organics are present, Katalox media requires sodium hypochlorite (bleach) as an oxidizer and killing agent, providing accelerated catalytic oxidation on the media surface. A solution tank and conversion kit can be purchased separately.

Made In Germany — Advanced Filtration Media
Katalox Light Media is used in Katalox iron filters, which remove iron, manganese, and sulfur while also raising the pH balance of the water. After nearly 40 years in the water treatment industry, Craig — QWT's own "Craig the Water Guy" — specifically calls this one of the most reliable media types he's worked with, without the water-quality restrictions some competing media require.
How to tell when it's time to replace it:
The system backwashes itself every four days, which is typical for iron filter media. If you notice good water pressure right after a backwash cycle, but pressure drops again well before the next scheduled backwash four days later, that's usually a sign the media is starting to clog and needs replacing. The other sign: the system is mechanically doing everything right — backwashing on schedule, drawing air correctly — but your water quality still isn't where it should be (sulfur odor returning, iron or manganese bleeding through). That's also a signal it's time for new media.
Removes:
Iron · Hydrogen Sulfide · Manganese · Arsenic · Heavy Metals · Radionuclides · Radium

Resources & Technical Details
⚠ Biofouling Information: Do NOT exchange pressure vessel media from one pressure vessel to another. Wet media absorbs nitrogen and oxygen from the air, which can immediately kick off bacteria growth. Biofouling on the media surface and other contamination can be present during a media exchange. Media containing biofouling cannot be reused — it's harmful for drinking water applications. Replacing with new media is highly recommended.
Katalox Light media is designed specifically to remove iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and other inorganic contaminants. Organic contaminants in your water could deteriorate the Katalox Light media surface over time, making it less effective at removing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide.
Additional Specs:
- Flow rate: 12 GPM/sq ft (30 m/h) with a single pressure vessel
- Backwash time: 5-10 minutes at 5.5 GPM/sq ft (13 m/h)
- Filters down to 2-3 microns
- pH operating range: 5.8-10.5
- Bulk density: 66 lbs/cubic foot
- Service flow: 6-12 GPM/sq ft
- Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 standards
