The RWSA operates 3 water treatment vegetation (WTP) to provide drinking water to the City of Charlottesville as well as the urban “ring” offered by the ACSA. The plants, with their supply of water indicated in parentheses, are the following: South Rivanna WTP (South Rivanna Reservoir). Observatory WTP (Ragged Mountain and Sugars Hollow Reservoirs). North Rivanna WTP (North Fork Rivanna River). All are surface drinking water supplies, replenished simply by precipitation, stream circulation, overland runoff, and groundwater flow. Almost all suppliers have minimal mineral content, are very “soft” (low in hardness, or scale), and there is little from the iron or manganese that is commonly found out with the groundwater of the area. Each grows employs both physical and chemical treatment processes before liberating water into the circulation system. Sodium hypochlorite is used at all 3 plants to safely disinfect the treated drinking water. Fluoride is added at each plant to advertise good dental health. The rose that provides water on your tap may vary now and then depending on demand, the amount of storage in the program, and your location. Prepared design changes by RWSA at all 3 plants will improve the therapy process, and thus, the standard of the water we deliver to you. Specifically, an attempt is being made to decrease the formation of chemical substances called disinfection by-products (TTHMs and HAAs; see discussion of contaminants). The RWSA was granted an extension by VDH related to the brand new, stricter requirements from the Stage 2 disinfection by-products rule till significant upgrades could be completed. An advanced treatment process that utilizes granular activated co2 (GAC) is being set up at each plant to result in higher quality drinking water. These upgrades will probably be completed at all 3 plants in the springtime of 2018. Inside the interim, powdered triggered carbon (PAC) exists at each plant to fulfill the new water top quality standards. In addition to lowering the levels of disinfection by-products, the usage of GAC should enhance the taste and smell of your water, too..
