The first pilgrims landed in the Chatham zone in 1816. The town of Chatham got its name October 22, 1836. Chatham is situated in what was once open prairie between Lick Creek and Panther Creek in Sangamon County, which around then was about the focal point of the new province of Illinois, roughly ten miles south of Springfield. The high level of productivity pulled in numerous to settle here, thinking about the hazard and threat of Indians. The lives of numerous Chatham individuals were interwoven with Abraham Lincoln. These lawmakers called the "Long Nine", included Lincoln and John Dawson. Lincoln was a decent companion of Rev. Josiah Porter, priest of the Chatham Presbyterian church. Dr. John Lewis, of Chatham, and Lincoln overviewed and obtained rights to construct the railroad from Springfield through Chatham to St. Louis. So as to tie down the move of the Capitol to Springfield, the town gave land (no under two sections of land) and needed to promise $50,000 to initiate assembling the State House. For a community of 1100 at the time, this demonstrated to be a battle. Cash was borrowed from the State Bank of Illinois. A note for the sum was marked by one hundred nearby natives and stored in the bank to pay the last portion of the advance..
