Old City Hall, 1904-1930 On July 9, 1904, offers opened for the development of Greenwood's first city corridor on East Market Street. The two-story block structure housed offices of the Mayor, marshal, city assistant, gatherer, just as waterworks, sewerage, the light plant and the city correctional facility. The subsequent floor established a huge and well-ventilated court and committee chamber. About the City Hall Building The structure was developed at an expected expense about $5,000. The area was depicted at the time as "truly outstanding around the local area, being straightforwardly on one of the essential boulevards." With a price tag of $20,500, the City of Greenwood set out to raise a "metropolitan structure lodging the whole regulatory elements of the City of Greenwood." Design and Construction The two-story City Hall was planned by Greenwood modeler R.J. Field and built by Howell Bros. Development Company in the Art Deco building style. Upon the arrival of its grand opening in 1930, guests were welcomed by a sign bearing in the diagram of a Greek Letter Delta, the legend, "Greenwood, Gateway of the Delta", and in the focal point of the letter, a bunch of cotton. Tenants Today, City Hall still stands with a large number of its unique engineering components flawless - a demonstration of Greenwood's celebrated past - filling in as home office for the day by day elements of Greenwood's city government. While departments have moved and new structures have been worked to suit the development of city services throughout the years, City Hall stays home to the offices of the Mayor and City Council, City Clerk, Human Resources, Inspection Division, and the Fire Department. - From the Greenwood Commonwealth - February 22, 1929; July 6, 1929; November 1, 2009.
