Fentress County was shaped in 1823 from bits of Morgan, Overton and White regions. The county was named to pay tribute to James Fentress (1763–1843), who filled in as speaker of the statehouse, executive of Montgomery County Court, and magistrate to choose seats for Haywood, Carroll, Gibson and Weakley areas in West Tennessee. Fentress County was the site of a few saltpeter mines. Saltpeter is the principle element of black powder and was acquired by filtering the earth from a few neighborhood caverns. The biggest mine was in York Cave, which is situated close to the Wolf River Post Office. At once, twenty-five enormous filtering tanks were inactivity in this cavern. As per Barr (1961) this cavern was mined during the Civil War. Bison Cave close to Jamestown was likewise a significant mine with twelve filtering tanks. Manson Saltpeter Cave in Big Indian Creek Valley was a little activity with four filtering tanks. It is conceivable that any of these caverns were mined during the War of 1812, when saltpeter mining was far-reaching in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Because of Governor Harris' soliciting the state government from severance, the two delegates for Fentress County in 1860; Reese T. Hildreth, and R. H. Bledsoe (of the State Senate and House individually) casted a ballot both for severance in 1861. Alvin York (1887–1964), a legend at the Meuse-Argonne Offensive during World War I, was conceived and lived in Fentress County. He additionally settled the Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in Jamestown in 1924. York's home and homestead are presently part of Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park in Pall Mall..
