Fentress County was shaped in 1823 from bits of Morgan, Overton and White regions. The county was named to pay tribute to James Fentress (1763–1843), who filled in as speaker of the statehouse, executive of Montgomery County Court, and magistrate to choose seats for Haywood, Carroll, Gibson and Weakley areas in West Tennessee.
