Hanover Municipal Water Works Drinking Water Report Info
In the fall of 1717 three boats docked in Philadelphia conveying around 300 foreigners from the Upper Rhine district of what later progressed toward becoming Germany. These 300 were the vanguard of a tsunami of Germanic outsiders who settled this area during the eighteenth century. Among the passengers on those boats in 1717 was a Lutheran priest around fifty years of age named Reverend Anthony Jacob Henkel. He, his family and child in-law Valentine Geiger, just as different passengers on those three boats were the main known changeless pioneers in New Hanover. By the spring of 1718 Henkel alongside his wife and seven youngsters were built up on 250 sections of land he purchased only west of present Hickory Park. It was Rev. Henkel who in the fall of 1717 or possibly mid 1718 here in New Hanover sorted out the primary German Lutheran assemblage in Pennsylvania. Following firmly behind on August 20, 1720, on the ship Laurel was a German Reformed schoolmaster from a similar district named Johannes Philip Boehm who drove German Reformed outcasts to settle along the Minister Creek. In 1725 it was Boehm, his neighbor Henry Antes, and other Reformed settlers who built up the primary German Reformed Congregation in Pennsylvania directly over the rivulet from the Lutherans. Both of these memorable assemblies are flourishing today. During the nineteenth century, New Hanover's economy was solely agribusiness alongside related exchanges, for example, metalworkers, tanneries, and grist factories. The populace was wholly German and from a similar district of the Upper Rhine called the Palatinate. They talked a Germanic vernacular from that area called "Pennsylvania Dutch" with which they continued most all family, social, and business issues into the twentieth century. Here, as elsewhere, the twentieth century brought overwhelming change. Starting around 1960, New Hanover's populace took off as lodging improvements supplanted ranchers' harvests, and fields were changed to rural areas. Simple nearness to the prospering economies of the Philadelphia area prodded the populace to twofold from 1960 to 1990. The Township keeps on growing today as individuals find in New Hanover the perfect blend of nearness to urban focuses while living in a quiet nation setting..
