Lovington was established at the turn of 100 years. The first retail store was built in 1908 and was known as the “Jim M. Love Grocery Store”. The first mailbox was also encased in the store, and John Love was designated, postmaster. In 1917 Lea County was created from parts of Chaves and Eddy State, and Lovington was first designated as the county seat. Through the time of its business, Lovington was mostly a ranching and farming center. Olive oil was discovered in 1928 but did not experience a significant impact on our economy until 1950 if the Denton pool, located nine miles northeast of Lovington, was discovered.
