The most punctual voyagers through this piece of Pennsylvania detailed the presence of a Standing Stone, which Native Americans had raised close to the intersection of Standing Stone Creek and the Juniata River. John Harris' record, written in 1754, depicted the stone as being 14 feet high and six inches square. Different records include that the pole was secured with images and pictographs that may have had verifiable or religious hugeness to the individuals who stamped it. Due to this stone monument, the primary name connected to the spot currently known as Huntingdon might have been "Standing Stone." By methods obscure, the first stone was expelled at an early date, probably by the individuals who had raised it, and was supplanted by another comparative stone on which were scratched the names of early surveyors and the date "1768." In his deed to a great deal close to 2nd and Allegheny Streets, the organizer of Huntingdon, William Smith, alludes to it as the "Old Stone parcel," which appears to show that the first stone had stood some place on that part. Today the area is isolated from the intersection of the brook and river by the railroad level and tracks, yet before the railroad existed, the parcel would have stretched out to the riverbank and would have been inside sight of where the two streams join. In time, the subsequent Standing Stone was expelled from the "Antiquated Stone part" to the yard of a stone house still in presence at 105 William Smith Street — a house possessed at the time by descendents of William Smith. Regardless of it's as a rule thick and impervious to breaking; the stone was broken into a few pieces by "vindictive" people, as indicated by a contemporary report. One piece of that stone endures and is shown in the primary passage of the Huntingdon County Courthouse. The names and date scratched into it such a long time ago can in any case be seen on its smooth dim surface. In 1896, as the Borough of Huntingdon was getting ready to praise the centennial commemoration of its consolidation, neighborhood industrialist J.C. Blair proposed that a stone shaft be raised to celebrate the first name by which the town was known. The present stone at Penn and William Smith Streets was committed in September 1896 and has remained from that point forward as a token of Huntingdon's long history as a position of significance in Central Pennsylvania.
