From the start, Jesup has had its history connected by crossties and spikes to the railroads that crossed inside as far as possible. Following the Civil War, Willis Clary of Appling County advanced toward Jesup – at that point known as Station Number 6 on the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. Jesup, long associated with the East Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia Railroad that was the parent company for the Macon and Brunswick line (At Willis Clary's encouraging, the Macon and Brunswick crossed the Savannah, Florida and Western at Jesup as a result of the fellowship among Clary and James R. Jesup) Street Names Being an organizer from the start, Clary had the roads of Jesup named for trees just as being numbered. Cherry, Walnut, Elm, Pine and Hickory, to give some examples, are the lanes you find in the region of the downtown region. The numbered roads start with first Street and move out towards what was then considered to be country – numbered in those days through eleventh Street. The exception in this standard is Macon and Brunswick Streets which were named for James R. Jesup's Macon and Brunswick Railroad. Whaley Family Jesup stayed a small village through the finish of the nineteenth century and on into the 1900s. Town pioneers took up business along the Broad Streets that ran parallel to the railroad tracks that made the town what it had become. Willis Clary's stepdaughter and Lucinda Clary's little girl, Georgia Buena Vista Lee, wedded an Englishman by the name of Harry Whaley and in this manner started one of the most persuasive families in the downtown region. Mr. Whaley was a good piece older than Georgia and passed on leaving Georgia very affluent. The Whaleys had a general store on Southwest Broad Street. You can see the name on the passage to the store even today. The Whaleys also owned the Merchants and Farmers Bank which Mrs. Whaley ran effectively following her better half's demise. This bank was bought by the Bank of Brunswick and later ended up American National Bank. American National Bank later turned into a piece of C&S and now is Bank of America. The Whaleys owned a few structures in the downtown region and a broad amount of land in the county. Other important pioneers in the business community incorporated the Wilkins, O'Quinn, Fender, Harper, Kicklighter, Ritch, Sullivan and McCann families..
