Mansfield Water Division Drinking Water Report Info
History of Mansfield The Town of Mansfield was set up in 1775 as a major aspect of the rich history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mansfield offers a remarkable educational system, and extraordinary condition. Mansfield's History by JENNIE F. COPELAND, HISTORIAN The accompanying article was composed by Jennie F. Copeland for and distributed in the Mansfield 150th Anniversary Program for August 23 through 26, 1925. Jennie Copeland is the creator of EVERY DAY BUT SUNDAY, The Romantic Age of New England Industry, a background marked by Mansfield. The twenty-third of August, 1925, marks one hundred and fifty years since, by a General Act of the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts, Mansfield ended up fused as a town. Five years prior, 1770, it had been, by a demonstration of the General Court, fused as a different district, and got its name to pay tribute to William Murray, Earl of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. lord_mansfield_sketch_small This Provincial Congress, an assortment of men, headed by John Hancock, had ventured into office to supplant the General Court which had met once and for all under British expert on Sept. 17, 1774. The Congress was considered by the British and Tories as demonstration of treachery, and every one of its institutions illicit. Thus when Massachusetts had a constitution and appropriately sorted out governing body, it reaffirmed certain past demonstrations. Along these lines, on March 23, 1786, the accompanying Act announced all spots fused by the name of districts before the principal day of January, 1777, to be towns, to each plan and reason whatever. standish_portraitWe start our history with the happening to the principal white man, Captain Miles Standish, who with John Brown and others, came, June 19, 1640, to review the land purchased by an organization of men from the Massachusetts Bay Colony three years prior, a track of land called the to Titiquet Purchase, which contained around sixty-four square miles. The northern purpose of this rhomboid of land is on the Fisher property, not a long way from Willow Street, and is referred to on old deeds as to Cobbler's Corner from the convention that one of the Standish gathering cobbled his shoes here. On June 6, 1668, is recorded another buy which concerns us. This was known as the Taunton North Purchase to recognize it from past buys. It incorporated an unpredictable tract around the northern furthest reaches of the Titiquet Purchase and added to Taunton the majority of the present towns of Mansfield, Norton and Easton. The principal pilgrims came in 1685; Thomas Brintnell toward the upper east corner, close to the Foxboro line, and John Caswell toward the east part. Were that a more drawn out treatise every pilgrim may well have in any event a passage dedicated to him. As it is we will make reference to particularly, just three, Nicholas White, the neighborhood statesman, Thomas Skinner, the main schoolmaster, and Ephraim Leonard, the entrepreneur. cobblers_corner_plaque_small1 Nicholas White became a force to be reckoned with when he, with George Leonard, (Norton) were made the specialists of the Taunton North Purchase to appeal to Taunton to be set off as a different town. Taunton was opposed to allow the solicitation. From November 27, 1707, until June, 1711, these two, as agents of their district, endured, by petitions to Taunton and to the General Court, until they won the battle. Hence, Norton, which included Mansfield, in 1711 turned into a town. Norton's first demonstration was to build up a congregation. Nicholas White was one of the pioneers in this as in all town issues. He was, in fact, the principal elder of the congregation, the primary town treasurer, for a long time one of the selectmen, and a delegate to the General Court. It is deserving of note that the principal delegate that Mansfield, as a different region, sent to the General Court was the child of Nicholas White. Inside a score of years after the partition from Taunton, the north area of Norton requested a division. Nicholas White is again in the forefront, heading a request to General Court. The request was allowed. On August 31, 1731, this segment moved toward becoming Norton North Precinct. Nicholas White was the mediator at the main region meeting. Around then the North Precinct contained thirty or thirty-five families. Holy places Prepa.
