Toccoa covers 8.31 square miles, and approxiately 8,500 inhabitants call Toccoa home. Wonderful Toccoa FallsThe town that was to develop into Toccoa was spread out in 1873 around a territory some time ago known as "Dry Pond." It was named for a pool there that was dry about all year and owes its starting to the railroad and a gathering of three far-thinking examiners. The three speculators - Dr. O.M. Doyle of Oconee County, S.C., B.Y. Sage of Atlanta and Thomas Alexander of Atlanta - foreseen the development of a new railroad through Dry Pond. They acquired 1,765 sections of land, had it overviewed into parts, advanced a May 27, 1873, parcel deal and expedited potential purchasers to the town journey trains. The City of Toccoa was officially sanctioned in 1874 and the names of downtown boulevards mirror the visionary trio; Sage, Doyle, and Alexander roads still confuse downtown Toccoa today. Toccoa was initially part of Habersham County, however numerous nearby occupants thought it was excessively far and too hard to even think about crossing the mountain to the county situate in Clarkesville. A gathering of inhabitants propelled a drive for a new county and their endeavors were compensated with the formation of Stephens County by a demonstration of the state lawmaking body. The primary chosen county officers got down to business on Jan. 1, 1906. Toccoa turned into the county situate. Extraordinary steps were made in Toccoa-Stephens County during the late 1930s. Capps Cotton Mill was obtained in 1937 by J&P Coats Co. also, would stay an assembling apparatus in the county for very nearly 70 years. Industrialist R.G. LeTourneau opened an earth-moving hardware assembling plant in 1938 and the Toccoa Airport was developed toward the finish of that year. World War II significantly affected the network. The U.S. armed force made Camp Toccoa where paratroopers in the military's new airborne units were prepared. The LeTourneau plant produced earth-moving machines utilized by the military in all battlefields. Work at the plant developed to upwards of 2,000 during the war years. LeTourneau's Lake Louise office, later known as Georgia Baptist Assembly, was changed over to an emergency clinic to treat injured assistance work force. Toccoa kept on thriving after the war. The City of Toccoa introduced and started activity of a petroleum gas framework that today extends from close Elberton right to Franklin, N. C. In the late 1960s, the City of Toccoa propelled a gigantic urban redevelopment task of the midtown region. Haggard structures were annihilated and city boulevards re-attempted to make the midtown zone a secured shopping center shopping zone. Catastrophe struck the network in 1977 when a dam situated on the waters of Toccoa Creek above Toccoa Falls College broke and the following flood guaranteed 39 lives. In 2007 after over 35 years in presence, the midtown shelters were obliterated and Doyle Street re-opened to traffic. The city watched its centennial in 1974 and was named an All-American City in 1976. Soul artist James Brown, blues vocalist Ida Cox, entertainer DeForest Kelley, and Olympic gold medalist Paul Anderson, among others have all called Toccoa home. Welcome to "delightful" Toccoa.
