The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County was made by goals of the Westmoreland County Commissioners on April 9, 1942 and praised its 75th year in business in 2017. The drinking water system of the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County was created over the past 75+ years through the key securing of built up systems and arranged water line augmentations to suit growth. In 1943, MAWC obtained Citizens Water Co. In 1950, MAWC gained Westmoreland Water Co. also, Vandergrift Water Co. what's more, began wanting to assemble the present Beaver Run Reservoir. McKeesport's Water System was acquired in 1987. Because of these and different acquisitions and developments, the administration region as now included expands roughly 25 miles from east to west and 40 miles from north to south and joins more than 2,400 miles of pipeline. Since 1973, the Authority has depended on the following two chief wellsprings of supply: BEAVER RUN RESERVOIR The Beaver Run Reservoir was developed in 1952 and after that extended in 1962. It has a present capacity of 11 billion gallons and a sheltered yield of 45 million gallons of water for every day. THE YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER The Youghiogheny River is the other chief wellspring of supply, with a seepage region of 1,326 square miles and a base flow of 213 million gallons of water for every day. The system is at present served by the following three current treatment offices: INDIAN CREEK SUPPLY FILTRATION PLANT The Indian Creek Supply Filtration Plant, situated close to the City of Connellsville, has an evaluated capacity of 40 million gallons for each day and draws its water supply from both Indian Creek and the Youghiogheny River and serves the southern bit of the MAWC administration domain and the North Versailles region. This office was developed in 1973 and was updated in 1979 and again in 2017-2018. MCKEESPORT FILTRATION PLANT The McKeesport Filtration Plant, situated in the City of McKeesport, was finished in 1990 with an evaluated capacity of 10 million gallons for every day. The McKeesport Plant draws its water supply from the Youghiogheny River and serves the McKeesport, White Oak and Port Vue part of the MAWC administration region. THE GEORGE R. SWEENEY WATER TREATMENT PLANT The George R. Sweeney Water Treatment Plant is situated at the Beaver Run Reservoir in Bell Township. This office supplanted a littler filtration plant and went online in July 1997. Overhauled in 2015, it has an appraised capacity of 24 million gallons for every day. This office serves the northern part of the MAWC administration domain. In 2012, the MAWC finished an interconnection to the Greater Johnstown Water Authority, allowing it to decommission its Furnace Run Water Treatment Plant. The Ligonier zone is now served by water treated by GJWA from its North Fork Reservoir. The MAWC additionally sells mass water to Duquesne, Monroeville, and Plum in Allegheny County; Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania American and Pleasant Valley in Fayette County; and Parks and Gilpin in Armstrong County. The wastewater system now serves Jeannette, Hempfield Township and the Boroughs of Penn, Youngwood, Ligonier, White Oak, and Avonmore, just as parts of the City of Greensburg, East Huntingdon, North Huntingdon, Penn, Sewickley, and Unity townships..
