Wicked winter weather can cause plumbing pipes to freeze and possibly burst, causing flooding and costly water damage to your home. In extreme cases of cold, or if you have had pipes freeze in the past let one of your faucets run very slowly. This is most effective with faucets that are farthest from the point where the main water line enters the house. Know the location of you water shutoff valve. If a pipe bursts anywhere in the house this valve turns off all water and could save your home from damage. If you are going away during cold weather, leave your heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees F. Have someone check the property while you are not there. If you plan to turn the heat off, be sure to drain all water from the pipes, toilets and water heater, and turn off the power source to the water heater. Our service/construction personnel locate the meter pit by the white plastic remote post. We ask that customers refrain from getting in meter pits especially during the winter months. If it is an emergency and you find it necessary to remove the meter pit lid please make sure the frost lid and meter pit lid are properly replaced to avoid freezing of the water meter. If you have no water or suspect you have frozen pipes please check the piping inside your dwelling/building before calling the office to have a service person sent to your property. If the service person finds the problem is on the customer side of the meter you will be charged a $50 + tax service charge.
