Well Pump Flow Rate GPM
How To size Iron Filters?

ANSWER:
1) Amount of Iron (mg/L) to be removed
2) Well Pump Flow Rate (GPM)
Iron filters need a minimum of 5 gallons per minute (GPM) to backwash properly.
The larger the iron filter and the type of media being used dictates what is needed.
Some iron filters can require up to 20 GPM to backwash!
If you install an iron filter that is not back-washed properly, the filter media will get fouled and the system will not perform as it is designed.
If you do not know what your well pump will produce, then the first thing you need to do is run a simple test on your well pump to get an estimated well pump flow rate (GPM).
PROPER FILTER SIZING
What Filter Size?
In general, match your effective well pump flow rate to the backwash requirements to select the appropriate filter size.
Typical size is the 1.5 CUFT size, if your well pump can accommodate. An option is that you can also select a smaller size, if higher flow rates are not required.

IRON ISSUES
Excessive Iron In Your Home's Water?

That reddish - brown stains on your fixtures can not only be embarrassing to look at, but can also severely damage your plumbing. A quality iron filtration may be needed.
Measure Your WELL PUMP FLOW RATE
Check your well pump's effective flow rate... Easy as 1, 2, 3...

Minimum Water Flow Rate Required:
The size of an iron filter or pH neutralizer system is dependent on the flow rate from your well pump.
Please check your flow rate to select the properly sized system.
Do not select a system that requires a higher flow rate.
Home size VS. WELL PUMP OUTPUT
Home Size & Bathrooms Are Secondary Factors When Sizing Iron Filters
This is due to your well pump's flow rate ability. Obviously, you can only use what your pump will give you.
Example:
If you have three showers running at the same time, you need about 7.5 GPM to operate them all and still have good water pressure.
But if your well pump only gives you 6 GPM, then you will not be able to operate all of those shower heads at the same time... not fun when shower water just drips out because of lack of water pressure.

So, if your well pump does 6 GPM, you options are limited to an iron filter that requires less then 6 GPM to meet proper backwash requirements.
Most iron filters that fit this criteria will typically have flow rates of 4 to 7 GPM.

Other factors when Sizing Iron Filters
While the well pumps effective flow rate is crucial to properly sizing your iron filter, you want to also include and consider other water quality factors. A quality iron filter may help resolve other issues, but in some instance, additional filters may be required.
A quality iron filter can help remove excessive water minerals, typically:
- Excessive Manganese
- Excessive Hydrogen Sulfide/ Sulfur
Additional water filters may be required, commonly:
- Acidic water
