Area Big Spring, the region seat of Howard County, is at the crossing point of Interstate Highway 20, U.S. Roadway 87, Texas State Highway 350, Farm Road 700, and the Missouri Pacific line in southwest central Howard County. The city is in a rough crevasse between two high foothills of the Caprock ledge in West Texas. The northern furthest reaches of the Edwards Plateau and the southernmost hills of the Caprock meet in Big Spring. Milestones and History It gets its name from the close by "big spring" in Sulfur Draw, which was a watering place for coyotes, wolves, and crowds of wild ox, antelope, and colts; the spring was a wellspring of contention among Comanche and Shawnee Indians and a campground utilized by early undertakings crosswise over West Texas. Signal Mountain, ten miles southeast of Big Spring, was a milestone utilized by early cattlemen. In 1849 Capt. Randolph B. Marcy's campaign arrived at Big Spring on the arrival trip from Santa Fe and checked it as a campground on the Overland Trail to California.
