The Endicott Estate was acquired during the War of 1812 by Joseph Peabody, the wealthiest Salem shipping shipper of his day, as the mid year retreat for the family for over 140 years. By 1892, the property had a place with Ellen Peabody Endicott, Joseph Peabody's granddaughter, who further augmented and decorated the focal house known as Glen Magna and encompassing grounds. Following her passing in 1926 her child, William Crowninshield Endicott, Jr., kept on pampering consideration on the Farms, redesigning and upgrading the bequest until his demise in 1936. He was instrumental in bringing the Derby Summer House (worked in 1794) to the property in 1901. The two story Adamesque structure has been recorded as a National Historic Landmark since 1968. The property has engaged two American Presidents, Taft and Cleveland. In 1961, under previous Town Manager Robert Curtis the Town bought 165 sections of land of the property for $330,000, including all the distant homestead structures, sparing it from a 250 home private advancement.
