In 1803, a school township was put aside in the almost uninhabited forests of northwestern Butler County. In 1810, a year after Miami University was contracted, the Village of Oxford was spread out and the first parcels were sold. In the next year, the first school was assembled and by 1830, with a populace of more than 700, the Village of Oxford was consolidated.
