A LITTLE HISTORY Donna is named for Donna Hooks, a girl of T. J. Snares who, starting in 1900, did a considerable amount of land improvement work in the then boondocks universe of the Rio Grande Valley. A few families from northern states, including the Ruthven, Champion, and Hooks families, settled the territory. Thomas Jefferson Hooks landed in the Lower Rio Grande valley in 1900 and the next year moved his family to Run in southeastern Hidalgo County. In May 1902 he framed the La Blanca Agricultural Company, which bought 23,000 sections of land fronting the river two miles east and two miles west of the site of present Donna and expanding north eighteen miles. He gave some portion of his buy to his twenty-one-year-old little girl, Donna Hooks Fletcher, a divorced person. She settled in the region and built up the Alameda (Grove) Ranch. Fletcher supplied the farm with Jersey dairy cattle acquired from the Lassater Ranch in Falfurrias and maintained a fruitful margarine business. The Hidalgo and San Miguel Extension (later called the Sam Fordyce Branch) of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway arrived at the site on July 1904, when the town was established. In 1907 the town got a warehouse and was named Donna out of appreciation for Donna Fletcher, who was postmistress when the Donna post office opened in 1908. That year the principal store in west Donna was built up by Ed Ruthven, and the network was perceived as the Texas station that transported the most productive in a year. A 500-ton-capacity sugar plant was worked in Donna that year. The Donna Developer was first imprinted on December 1, 1910, in Chapin.That year the Community Church was built and shared by the town's Protestant gatherings. The First Presbyterian Church was established on July 10, and the First Baptist Church was composed on July 24, 1910. The phone trade was introduced in 1911. Donna joined on April 13, 1911. By 1912 the town was separated into Donna and East Donna. East Donna, the Mexican part of town, had a mail station named Beatriz, after Beatriz Hooks, from 1912 to 1916. Training The main educator in Donna was Paciana Guerra of Mier, Tamaulipas, enlisted in 1911 by Severiano Avila, Apolonio Ballí, and Ventura Bentiz to teach their kids. In 1913 the first graduating class of four moved on from Donna High School. Around then the Donna school district included all of Weslaco and came to the Mercedes corporate limit. BUSINESS A store was moved from Run to Donna in 1914 by Andrew Champion. In 1915 Donna had a populace of 1,500, a bank, a lodging, four places of worship, two cotton gins, the sugar factory, and a week by week paper named the Donna Dispatch, distributed by B. L. Creeks. In 1916 the Donna Light and Power Company was joined by A. F. Hester, Sr., T. J. Snares, Dr. J. B. Roberts, and twenty investors. The American Legion Hall, Donna Border Post No. 107, was committed in 1920. Donna had an expected populace of 1,579 out of 1925. By 1936 it had a populace of 4,103, a railroad stop, various homes, and 110 organizations.
